Research - Websites examples

Examples of websites with a kid-friendly appeal.

http://www.cupsannual.ca/

  • The animation of characters and fishing hook across all pages makes for an interesting website.
  • Consistent fonts, illustrations and aesthetic.
  • Easy to read and navigate

  • These web pages have bright colours with a fun and happy mood which makes an impact on the child's mind. It draws their attention and will make them want to return to the web page.
  • Fun characters/figures to reach out to children
  • quirky lines and shapes

Looking at the TV programs kids watch and web pages.

Other websites that have good FADPs. They don't necessarily target kids but feature a clear grid layout (images and type).

Week 3

We thought about how our concept could be extended across other touchpoints and how it could grow into a narrative. We decided to further explore the concept 'light up their imagination' but alter it so it's more versatile for the website and stickers.
We want our touchpoints to be a self-discovery/journey for the user. The poster encourages kids into the performing arts area, which is then followed by the website that shows the kid practicing magic (with animals). Finally, the stickers will be a takeaway item that includes information about the kid 'saving the Hannah Playhouse.'

We did the journey map which helped outline what the user does, feels and think at each stage of the event.

Week 3 - Interim

We had our first interim presentation where we had to show 2 different rhetorical concepts. We focused developing a poster each. The feedback we got was positive and our topic and target audience was clearly communicated.

The poster is meant to encourage the imagination of children by attracting them and their parents to attend a magic show at the Hannah Playhouse. The light comes out of his hat to communicate the idea of a boy imagining himself as a magician.

Some things to consider from feedback:
  • Our posters don't relate to a New Zealand context.
  • Remove the text 'free tea and coffee for parents' because it doesn't contribute to the poster.
  • Mention HOW to save the Hannah Playhouse
  • For the 'light up their imagination' poster - maybe have another character in the hat.
  • Think about if we want to go with kid or animal characters

Week 2

Monday:

We did the design matrix to help us come up with rhetorical ideas. We also pinned up our four A3 concepts. After looking at everyone's concepts, we realized that our concepts don't communicate a strong rhetorical idea. They only attract kids to come to a performance. Our goal now is to create concepts that are meant to encourage the new generation into the performing arts areas as well as coming up with more clever sayings.

Our 4 concepts:

We received some feedback on making our posters stand out from the rest which can be done through the use of contrast.

Week 1

Our first lesson was an introduction to Koha. We have chosen 'Save our Arts venue' as our topic and the Hannah Playhouse as our venue. For our takeaway item/promotional material, we thought making stickers would be a fun idea.

In class, we did the Simpsons exercise where we had to put ourselves in the position of a Simpsons character and try to attract them to come to a street BQQ. This helped us understand how the importance of attracting a target audience.

After researching our topic and venue, we decided to base our concepts on a live performance. We each made a few thumbnails that were meant to engage the viewer to attend some type of performance. During our planning process using the project plan handout, we narrowed down the type of live performance to a magic show. A magic show would be a fun approach to the brief as we can play around with illustration and characters. Our target audience are now children. After looking at stylistic precedents, we want our style to be based on vector illustration with a bright, fun and dream-like atmosphere that'll attract kids to go to the magic show.
